From Little Boat to Legend:

The Story of the Barchetta,

In 1948, an Italian journalist looked at a radical new Touring-bodied Ferrari 166 and nicknamed it “Barchetta”, little boat. The name stuck. A year later, that same doorless, roofless racer did the impossible: chassis 0008M won the Mille Miglia outright, then went straight to Le Mans, where Luigi Chinetti drove nearly the entire 24 hours himself to deliver Ferrari’s first-ever Le Mans victory, and the first Le Mans win for a V12 engine. To this day, it remains the only car to win both races on the same chassis.

Fifty years later, Ferrari reached back for that name to crown something equally special. The 550 Barchetta Pininfarina launched at the 2000 Paris Motor Show as a birthday tribute to Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary, a true, top-optional roadster, limited to 448 examples, each with a dashboard plaque signed personally by Sergio Pininfarina A nickname born on a racetrack. A legend reborn as a birthday gift.

This is that car.
